SEEDO – SRI LANKA

SEEDO - Sri Lanka is a non governmental Organization operating in Sri Lanka and working towards fulfilling development needs of the Sri Lankan communities. Our history………………………………

The present SEEDO Sri Lanka is the out come initiative taken by six youths engaged in social development activities in Moneragala district under organizations such as National youth service council, SARANA foundation and Uva community development center. Working in this organization these youths understood that they can provide better solution to burning problems faced by poor communities living in rural and remote villages in Monaragala district and Hambantota district. Most of the organizations under which they worked, followed the traditional social development process under “one man show” leader ship. These youth changed this attitude and started to work collectively to achieve the desired expectations in these communities.

That was the beginning of SEEDO – Sri Lanka in February 1992 and started work with initiative and self-confidence. North East war created lot of problems in Monaragala district as the East boundaries of Moneragala district. Continuo’s attack by LTTE to bordering villagers created pathetic conditions in some of the villagers such as Kotiyagala, Niyandella, and Ethimale. Under these circumstances SEEDO Sri Lanka started to work to support the peace process initiated by then government and implemented some welfare activities to support affected communities in bordering villagers. During the same period the SEEDO Sri Lank implemented credit and agricultural development programme under NDTF, Ministry if Health, Ministry of Environment. About community members living in Badalkumbura, Monaragala, Buttala, Madulla, Siyambalanduwa D.S. divisions were benefited by these programmes.

SEEDO Sri Lanka participated election-monitoring programmes in the district with the support of Paffrel to ensure the maintenance of democratic rights and free election in the district

In 1999 the governing committee of the SEEDO Sri Lank decided to conduct and overall evaluation to assess the impact of development programme and identify the most critical issues that need intervention of NGO like SEEDO Sri Lank to solve the problem faced by community members living neglected and marginalized villagers in Moneragala district. At this evaluation SEEDO Sri Lank identify three main focusing area for it’s future intervention.

  1. Changing of popular attitudes and behavior of communities members to be active partners in the social development process instead of passive on lookers
  2. Involvement of community members and women in political decision making process
  3. Intervention to improve the educational and performance level of children studying in poor rural schools in remote schools
  4. Introduction of a sustainable economic and environmental development process to ensure protection of decent and proper lively hood for the farming community in the district

At percent SEEDO Sri Lank is a well organized and well experienced organization with a strong network facilities with the organizations working at district, provincial and National level.

Structure of the SEEDO Sri Lank provides facilities for the participation rural community leaders, government officers and civil society leaders in social development process.

The Tsunami, the worst hit tragedy in Sri Lanka……………………..
After the Tsunami, we were needed by the communities in the down south which severely hit by the catastrophe. In these case MercyCorps, a another INGO came into the arena and joined hands with SEEDO - Sri Lanka to uplift the society of the Hambantota district which then characterized by the depression, disappointment and tensions. In Sri Lanka, in Hambantota District, we are working in 11 communities. Under this program, the Livelihood and community Recovery program, it is supposed to give 5o lakhs of Sri Lankan rupees and 20 lakhs Sri Lankan rupees to the development of the sanitation for each community. This program should be implanted by a village level CBO called CAG (Community Action Group) which is appointed through an election within the community. So this enables community to elect their own committee.

Dear R.M.D. Kumaratunga,
Greetings from Paris,

In the scope of developing a project with rubber industry in the South East of Sri Lanka, we are looking for a NGO focused on farmers capacity building.
Indeed I’ve visited your website and the services that you offer might have benefit to several farmers in the past years.
Being based in France it’s challenging these days to identify good partner that genuinely knows farmers issues and constraint in the field.
Would you be able to have a call to discuss about that?
Best,
